Many critical studies that explore the historical, social and cultural peculiarities of Latin America define Latin American societies as heterogeneous, complex and extremely conflictive; considering them as “transitional societies”, emerging from colonial situations, in which the construction of a common horizon is not possible. These studies have also pointed out that Latin Americans live at a permanent crossroads: between Western seduction and the reverberations of our own history. This tension is particularly painful because it often involves a displacement of one’s own culture without any possibility of effectively internalizing the other.

In this conference, we want to continue analyzing the problems affecting Latin America, but also to imagine ways out of our crossroads, looking at the problem but also at the possibility. For this reason, we ask ourselves: how certain is the impossibility of a common horizon in Latin America, what utopian ideas could transform, liberate, question the social order and articulate better living conditions? How are the relationships between colonizer and colonized peoples being transformed? What non-colonial rationalities are emerging, and what are the possibilities for the future, what non-colonial rationalities are emerging or gaining visibility? What original subjectivities and new ways of feeling and dreaming are emerging? How has the current COVID-19 crisis affected Latin America in particular? In which ways could we go about constructing a new historical sense, a new past, a new perspective of Latin America?
